Sleeve Pekingese

Do you breed Sleeves?

Sleeves are rare and not easy to find. Most everyone would love to have one, including me. I've never bred one. They can't be bred for. I mean you can't breed two sleeves and end up with sleeve puppies. First, responsible pekingese breeders wouldn't breed a sleeve girl because she is too small and could very well and most likely have full size puppies which would kill her. She would not be able to carry them. Sleeves come from regular size pekingese and there is never any way to know when or if you will get one in a litter. Sleeves just happen or they don't.

A sleeve has to be 6 pounds or under as an adult to be sure it is a sleeve. And the sure way to know then if it's a true sleeve is to know if it was the same in birth weight as it's siblings. If a pup is just smaller than the other pups at birth, it could very well just be the runt. A sleeve is the same in birth weight and just stops growing at a later time. Sleeves are generally healthy and long-lived as opposed to runts that may not be healthy. Standard pekingese are 8 to 13 pounds as adults with 14 pounds being over the limit.

This is Allie, a sleeve pekingese who belongs to my friend, Carol Dunn of Mai~Luvs Pekingese in Oklahoma. I was once blessed with the opportunity to babysit her. Her character and charm can never be copied in a picture but believe me, she is absolutely adorable.

This is Princess. She was rescued from a shelter by my friend Susan. She is a sleeve, weighing 6 pounds and is 4 years old.

She has a new life now and will be doing a photo shoot for a photographer for Leisure Arts in Little Rock where she will be paid for her time.

She is the true sleeve with attitude to match and is very happy in her new home that she shares with her best friend, a peke boy named Gabe who was also in rescue and taken by Susan.

The two pekes would not have been happy apart so they are now the spoiled kids of a very loving mom.
